The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife foresees that the Early Childhood and Primary Education Centers (CEIP) of the municipality manage to save 61 percent of their electricity consumption, through the installation of photovoltaic panels.

The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, explains in a note that this is an initiative that has obtained funding from European Next Generation funds and that it will have a subsidy for the installation of sustainable systems to reduce the carbon footprint of schools.

He explains that an aid of 309,995 euros will be available, for a total planned investment of 679,937.62 euros.

Bermúdez points out that this is not an isolated action, but is part of the municipality’s global strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, also included in the Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES).

In the note, the mayor recalls other initiatives such as low emission zones (ZBE), of which the Urban Zone is already operational, excluding road traffic, except for residents and loading and unloading; the commitment to 100% electric public transport, with the investment in 11 buses for urban lines, in addition to its efficient and sustainable recharging points, among others.

Juan José Martínez, responsible for the strategic projects of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, indicates in the note that included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the City Council presented the request for aid for 34 Early Childhood and Primary Education Centers ( CEIP) of the city, with the aim of meeting the climate objectives of the municipality”.

He explains that it is planned to install a total renewable power on the roofs of these public schools of 405.98 kWp, which will allow the production of 720,806 kWh of energy per year, which would represent 61% of the total energy used in these centers ” .

The execution period ends 18 months after the definitive and specific concession that CEIP San Fernando will also have a clean energy installation, the only school that was going to be left out, since its roof was recently remodeled, and it did not allow this initiative .

Claudia Reverón, Councilor for Education, highlights the permanent contact with the school community that has allowed a fluid dialogue to probe the high sensitivity to issues related to responsible energy consumption and adds that in the vast majority of schools, the availability to adopt measures that collaborate in energy saving is total.
