When the 2023 Carnival is already heating up, the echoes of the one held last June still remain. And it is that the so-called Summer Carnival had an economic impact for Santa Cruz of 15.1 million euros, a more than acceptable figure despite the shift in time of the party, and that it competed with other celebrations. This follows from the study commissioned by the Development Society and to which DIARIO DE AVISOS has had access.

According to the entity in charge of which the councilor is Alfonso Hair, the field work was carried out through a survey of 1,635 people, both residents in the capital and outside of it, through which different aspects of this summer Carnival were analyzed and in which, according to the same study, Almost 23% of the island’s population participated, which represents some 186,000 people. The last study of this type carried out by the Development Society dates from 2019, the year in which, with a celebration of Carnival in February, it had an impact of 35 million, 20 more than the exceptional Carnival of 2022.

The total amount of the 15 million spent comes from the analysis of the average spending made by the attendees, but also by those who did not attend the party and spent for other members of the household. Thus, the total direct expenditure stood at 77.24 euros on average for those attending the Carnival, with a direct expenditure per day of 69.25 euros on average. To this we must add the money used by the participants indirectly, plus the money made by the population that has not participated in the Carnival. From that sum comes an economic impact of 15,148,240.44 euros.

The main beneficiaries of this expense are the businesses related to the consumption of food and drink in the kiosks, which took some seven million, which represents 47% of the total expense, while approximately 2.6 million were allocated to consumption in restaurants, bars and cafes.

The figure for spending on costumes and accessories was around 1.8 million; spending on attractions and fairs was 0.7, and the section related to spending on transport, fuel, or parking is estimated to have been around 1.7 million. Finally, the expenditure related to acts and shows stood at about 0.7 million and that related to accommodation was around 71,000 euros.

The report also addresses issues such as the age of the attendees, which stands at an average of 37 years, with a predominant male profile, resident in Santa Cruz and in the extended metropolitan area, with higher education and employed (works) .

Although it is something that can be inferred, the report of the Development Society confirms with figures that the Carnival by Day and the Carnival by Night are the two acts that present the highest rates of attendance among those surveyed, so that some 111,000 people attended the first and the second another 105,000. The average attendance at the events is 1.15 days, that is, the respondents confirm that they attended the party at least one day, which was concentrated in less than a month.
