The Cabildo de Tenerife is working to have a housing stock for affordable rental. This was stated yesterday by the counselor for the area, Zebenzuí Chinea, during an appearance in the Plenary, in which he emphasized that “the commitment exists” and “the Cabildo will have a small park to allocate to affordable rent, and we are working on it with the technicians”, he highlighted. In addition, he explained that “the housing market of stressed municipalities” has been studied; Meetings have been held with real estate market agents, banks, the Government of the Canary Islands and Visocan, and an “exhaustive analysis of the situation” has been carried out.

As a result of this work, he explained that, after a meeting with Sareb’s new management team last July, “the area already has a portfolio of properties owned by Sareb that can be acquired or transferred for use, with 147 properties in different municipalities” . In addition, “120 homes that another group has must be added, and 35 more properties by Servihabitat and Coral Homes”, and added that “there is already a draft agreement for the purchase of these properties”.

The counselor also valued the other actions that the Cabildo is carrying out in this matter, such as the ARRUs program, which has benefited 5,055 homes, the Base 25 project, collaboration with the Government to stop evictions (303 between 2021 and the first months of 2022) or the municipal cooperation plan, among others.

From the opposition, they asked for more efficiency in budget management and execution and innovative programs. Sí Podemos Canarias also reminded him of the situation of 48 families in a building in Granadilla, and from CC they criticized that Tenerife is the “most affected” in the Canary Islands Plan 2022-2025.

On the other hand, the Plenary approved a consensual institutional motion based on a CC proposal to improve the management of health waiting lists, with measures such as urging the Government to carry out a study of the weaknesses and threats of the Canarian system of health or urge the completion of the two hospitals in the north and south of the island, among others.

The ordinary session of the Plenary ended with the acknowledgment of the letter of resignation of the island councilor María Coromoto Yanes (CC) and, after a recess, continued with the extraordinary session scheduled for the voluntary appearance of the Social Action councilor, Marián Franquet , to report on the situation of the IASS centers in the face of the recent complaint from the works council. A session that began with the strong insistence of some IASS workers present in the room to intervene, generating a tense situation. After a break, the workers agreed to remain silent in the room although, after several interruptions, the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, ordered them to vacate the room.

IASS situation

Marián Franquet defended the management of the IASS and the attention that is given and flatly denied the accusations of mistreatment of users made by the president of the works council. He also criticized CC’s “totally irresponsible attitude” in taking the statements for granted without having verified them. The counselor also explained that the Cabildo has been working for some time on the incorporation of 169 professionals to the IASS centers, of the RPT, which is expected to be approved by the Governing Council on November 8.
