An extraordinary plenary session to analyze social and health management

The President of the Council, Peter Martincall today an extraordinary and urgent plenary session of the insular corporation to explain the situation of the centers of the Insular Institute of Social and Socio-Sanitary Care (IASS). Martín values that “given the seriousness of some baseless accusations, I have given instructions so that the Minister of Social Action, Marián Franquet, can report on the situation of the centers dependent on the Cabildo.”

The decision is a consequence of a statement issued this week by the Company Committee of the public body, signed by all the unions, which denounces alleged irregularities in management. Canarian Coalition, the main opposition force in the institution, echoed and raised “serious” deficiencies in the care of the most vulnerable patients. The plenary session will be held at the end of the ordinary plenary session in October, convened for today at 10:00 am (Plenary Hall).

Pedro Martín was questioned about the possibility, as proposed by the Doctors’ Union, of using the Fairgrounds temporarily – in the manner of Zendal in Madrid, in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic – to attend to certain groups due to the lack of social and health places on the island. The president explains that “the Cabildo de Tenerife has collaborated with the Canary Health Service (SCS) on numerous occasions such as during the pandemic when we made numerous facilities available, both the Fairgrounds and other pavilions.” He stresses that “I think that this proposal should be studied because until today (yesterday) no one has approached us to raise it.”

Creation of new places

Just a few days ago, the Cabildo, through the IASS, announced the construction of nine centers for the elderly distributed throughout the Island with a total of 639 beds and an investment of 43.7 million.

One of the most advanced projects is the center of Santa Úrsula, which will allow the creation of 70 new places, 40 residential and 30 day centres, and for which there is a budget of 534,312 euros.

In the southern area, the Minister explained that the works of the Abades Center, in Arico, with capacity for 76 residential places, have already been awarded and the forecast is that they will begin to be executed before the end of the year, with an investment of 3.5 millions of euros.

Minister Franquet also made a recent balance in the sense that the current mandate for a total of 259 new places to attend to mental health and thus guarantee the well-being of people until reaching more than 930 in this area on the Island. The also president of the IASS highlights the residential resources for dual pathology destined to treat people who suffer from mental illnesses and, at the same time, a disorder due to addictions.

Canarian Coalition, through a statement, ensures that it “forces” the holding of the extraordinary plenary session “on the mismanagement of the PSOE in the IASS centers.” The nationalists consider that their complaint is the origin of the decision taken.

In this regard, they abound that “the IASS Company Committee has sent 16 letters from June to September without obtaining a response.” The nationalist group recalls that there are more than 7,000 people demanding a socio-sanitary bed. CC requests “that the centers be provided with material to serve users with dignity and that the modification of the List of Job Posts (RPT) of the entity dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife be approved. This refers to the workforce.
