The Cabildo de Tenerife has announced this Thursday the winners of the XXVI edition of the ‘House of Honey Tenerife Regional Honey Contest’.
On this occasion, the ‘Great Golden Cell for the Best Honey of the Canary Islands 2022’ with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) has gone to the beekeeper Pedro Braulio Ledesma González, of the Rika brand, for a honey from Retama del Teide.
In the category of without Protected Designation of Origin, the ‘Great Golden Cell for the Best Honey of the Canary Islands 2022’ has been awarded to the producer Jonás Díaz González (La Palma), of the Hoya del Brezal brand, for a honey from Tedera, while the award for best presentation went to Tenerife beekeeper Juan Jesús Ramos Fariña, from the Oromiel brand.
The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, who presided over the blind tasting, values in a note “the importance of this event, which is celebrating its 26th anniversary, to improve the quality of honey from Tenerife and increase its social notoriety” , and emphasizes “the need to continue defending Retama del Teide honey, a unique product in the world whose quality has been demonstrated with this award”.
In this sense, he emphasizes “the added value that the Miel de Tenerife PDO represents, with its 14 registered varieties, for the gastronomy of the island” and recalls that, in just two years, the production of honey with denomination of origin has increased by 76 percent, to reach 22,554 kilos in 2021.
In this edition, a total of 60 honey samples have been presented, 40 from Tenerife, 13 from La Palma, 4 from Gran Canaria, 4 from La Gomera and 3 from El Hierro.
The jury has had the participation of Gian Luigi Marcazzan, international honey taster, president of the sensory analysis committee of the International Honey Commission and member of the Council for Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economy (CREA).
The blind tastings, which were held in different categories, began on Wednesday morning and ended today at noon. As in previous editions, the jury took into account the color, smell, texture and taste sensation of the samples.
The contestants were able to present their products in the category of multifloral (soft, medium and intense) and monofloral honeys.
The multifloral ones are those in which no specific species or set of plant species predominates, while the monofloral ones are those that come from a flowering or from a very small group of these (chestnut honey, tedera, tajinaste, avocado, heath, barilla, Teide broom or pennyroyal, among others).
The awards ceremony will take place on November 19 at La Casa de la Miel, in El Sauzal.
GOLD AND SILVER CELLS
The Cedillas de Oro were awarded to Alejandro Delgado Afonso (Tenerife), of the Miel Ucanca brand, for a pennyroyal monofloral; Antonio Luis Díaz Santos (La Gomera), of the Villa Clara brand, for a monofloral alpodadora and José Manuel Cabrera Hernández (Tenerife), of the El Productor brand, for a chestnut honey.
Isidro Díaz Pérez (La Palma) of the Tagoja brand was also distinguished with Silver Cells, for a honey from Tedera; Eustaquio García Hernández (Tenerife), of the El Productor brand, for a honey from Retama del Teide and another from Tajinaste; Dunia Armas Zamora (El Hierro), from the Aromas de El Hierro brand, with monofloral thyme; Antonio López Déniz (Gran Canaria), from the Montes de Malpedrosillo brand, with monofloral agave; Bebel Camacho García (La Palma), from the brand, with monofloral Oregano; Juan Manuel Cabrera Hernández (Tenerife), from the brand, for a honeydew honey; Noelia Ascanio Quintana (Gran Canaria), from the El colmenar La Violeta brand, for a soft multifloral; Osvaldo Yanes Simón (La Palma), of the La Destiladera brand, with an intense multifloral; Alejandro Sierra Hernández (Tenerife), from the El Productor brand, for a Hinojo honey; and Guillermo Hernández Martín (La Palma), of the Miel Tagoja brand, with a medium multifloral.
