SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25 Oct. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife and the Coastal Action Group (GAC Tenerife) have organized a conference on offshore wind energy to discuss and address the energy needs of the Canary Islands, the environmental impacts of this energy and its interaction with local artisanal fishing.
The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, highlights the importance of this meeting “which will feature speakers with very diverse profiles – energy companies, professors, representatives of public administrations and the fishing sector – with the aim of oppose opinions and perspectives and to know the repercussions of this source of energy”.
In this sense, Javier Parrilla emphasizes in a note the importance of “promoting coexistence and promoting the development of marine renewable energies in a reasonable and planned way so that the impact on the island’s fishermen and fisherwomen is as little as possible, taking into account the social roots of this productive sector and its importance for the island’s economy”.
Offshore wind power is one of the renewable energy sources proposed to be developed in the Canary Islands and the strength of the winds and the characteristics of the climate make the sea of the islands a favorable area for this type of installation.
However, according to the Coastal Action Group, wind energy also has disadvantages.
In the case of Tenerife, the effect on local artisanal fishing and the visual and environmental impact are some of its drawbacks, in addition to the consumption of space on a scarce maritime platform.
The talks will be held this Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Tagoror room of the Hotel Escuela de Santa Cruz de Tenerife and will feature five talks and a discussion table.
The event will feature the participation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands; the Industrial Engineer and Professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Roque Calero Pérez; the legal adviser of the National Federation of Brotherhoods and Spokesperson of the Platform in defense of Fisheries and Marine Ecosystems, Torcuato Teixeira; the Wind Company Association and Disa Renovables and SEO Birdlife in the Canary Islands.
