SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 21 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has launched the Climate Change and Energy Observatory of Tenerife in the form of a web page from which data on emissions, energy consumption or aid is offered under the direction https://occet.es.

“Next October 24 is the ‘International Day to Fight Climate Change’ and coinciding with this anniversary we present this new tool, which follows, in addition to one of the provisions contemplated in the Declaration of Climate Emergency that was approved by the Council of the Island Government of the Cabildo on September 17, 2019”, said the Minister for Sustainable Development and the Fight against Climate Change, Javier Rodríguez Medina, at a press conference.

In his opinion, “this website will serve as a center for up-to-date information on climate change and sustainable energy, and will provide data to Tenerife society, both from the citizen and civil society spheres as well as from the administrative, economic, scientific and the academic”.

To do this, he continued, “the Observatory will collect knowledge, publications and actions on the different facets and variables involved in climate change on an island scale”.

The head of the service of the Cabildo’s Sustainable Development area, Víctor García, commented that through this new instrument “a follow-up of the evolution of climate change and its variables on the island will be carried out and published, as well as its effects on the different environmental, economic and social sectors.

On the other hand, the observatory will also host an Energy Poverty Observatory in Tenerife in order to offer an information center on aid, how to reduce the price of the electricity bill and monitoring of energy poverty at the island level, ” issues that will provide help for decision-making in this matter,” said the counselor.

The Climate Change and Energy Observatory of Tenerife will continuously present the results of a periodic monitoring of the variables and effects of the phenomenon on the island, “although it is still in the initial phase, but it will attend to a process of continuous improvement through which its list of services will be expanded”, added Víctor García.

This platform will carry out inventories of insular emissions on the path to carbon neutrality in 2040, will transparently present the expenses and investments made by the corporation in this matter and will report on the progress of the EU’s ‘Covenant of Mayors’ in the island.
