CANARY ISLANDS MARINE FUNDS | The shocking underwater secrets of the Canary Islands: a volcanic Atlantis

The volcanic origin of Canary Islands reveals pleasant surprises in its seabed. The Archipelago emerged in a slow process formed millions of years ago from the abyssal plains three kilometers deep. The lava from the different volcanic eruptions crossed the surface of the sea as different mantles of volcanic material overlapped.

One of the latest researchers to be surprised by the underwater nature of the Canary Islands has been Enrique Talledo, documentalist, cameraman and photographer who is in charge of portraying the wildlife of the oceans. The Atlantic of the Canary Islands has not left him indifferent, as he himself has been in charge of reflecting on his social networks after plunging into the sea that surrounds the island of Tenerife.

“Fascinating lava flows of capricious magmatic rocks forms lie under the Canarian waters. I have never seen anything like it, in any other sea”shows surprised Tellado, director of the project secretsofocean.com.

Talledo describes that “at sight it seems that we are in great temples of anthropic origin or even the ruins of ‘Atlantis‘. However, it is nature itself that has created numerous hexagonal basalt columns forming one of the most surprising and beautiful visual spectacles of the ocean”. He accompanies his comments with impressive marine images of the areas of La Rapadura, Garachico and La Atlantida.

Talledo’s host in this underwater adventure has been the naturalist and renowned photographer of underwater images Sergio Hanquet that “has guided us in an exquisite way, together with the diving centers”.

The Organs of La Gomera

The magmatic forms that Talledo has photographed in Tenerife are reminiscent of one of the best-known basaltic formations in the Canary Islands. Is about The Organs of La Gomera, a natural monument of volcanic origin that owes its name to the similarity of its columns with authentic pipes of a gigantic organ. This beauty of nature is located to the north of the town of Vallehermoso and it is only possible to see it from the sea, so a visit to this natural enclave by boat is one of the tourist attractions of the Colombian island.

Exhibition in Los Cristianos

The project led by Talledo has organized the photographic exhibition Secrets of the Ocean which includes 30 images of marine species from the Canary Islands. It can be visited until tomorrow, Thursday, October 20, in the Cultural Center of Los Cristianos (Tenerife).
