The massive use of wet wipes and their dumping in the toilets continues to be one of the main problems in the sanitation network of Puerto de la Cruz, due to the fact that it causes breakdowns both in the pipes and in the pumping stations that drive the wastewater. to the treatment plant. “This mechanical equipment suffers from receiving not only water, which is what they are prepared for, but also wipes, which form a knot and clog both stations and networks,” said Aqualia’s production manager, Braulio Domínguez, yesterday during the presentation of last year’s management report, in which 25,000 kilos were collected.

However, he clarified that a reduction has been noted thanks to Aqualia’s active campaign Don’t throw it away, started four years ago throughout the country, and to the awareness activities organized in the educational centers of the municipality.

Domínguez detailed the activity of the concessionaire in 2021 accompanied by the mayor, Marco González; the Councilor for Community Welfare, Flora Perera, and the head of the Aqualia Service, Federico Mendoza. The latter listed some data that support the work done by the different departments of the company. Thus, he confirmed that the number of breakdowns was reduced, from 628 in 2020 to 429 last year; 457 scuppers were cleaned and unblocked; 262 leaks were detected and repaired; More than 100,000 cubic meters of water were saved, and 526 meters were replaced.

Likewise, maintenance was carried out on the six pumping stations, located in Playa Jardín, El Faro, San Telmo, Playa Chica, El Caletón, and Martiánez.

The mayor highlighted the progress that has been made in the service, the result of daily and joint work between both entities with the aim of developing the most satisfactory management possible, both for small consumers and for large water users such as hotels. .

For her part, Flora Perera highlighted the high degree of commitment of the company’s staff so that the water and sewage service is not only provided in the best conditions, but also to solve the problems that arise throughout the year in the municipality.
