SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 18 Oct. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The beach of La Nea, in the municipality of El Rosario, welcomed the release of two ‘Caretta caretta’ turtles on Tuesday after spending a period of time recovering at the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Center of the Cabildo de Tenerife.
The release was carried out by volunteer personnel from the Spanish Red Cross, an NGO that recovered one of them in a compromised state of health, as she was entangled.
The Minister of Natural Environment Management, Isabel García, attended this release to directly thank the Red Cross for the “excellent work” it carries out on the coast and specifically highlighted the collection of this large specimen of turtle and the support that this NGO provides “in the shearwater collection campaign every year”.
For her part, the president of the Spanish Red Cross in Tenerife, María Teresa Pociello, recalled that the work carried out in La Tahonilla “is an example of good work by public institutions with fauna”, and recalled that “the training and The information provided in the center is essential for the volunteers who offer their service on the coast, especially when animals like these are found”.
One of the released specimens was collected in the south of the island with an infection in the shell that has been completely recovered, although traces of dermatitis still remain on the shell.
The other, which weighed more than 26 kilos, was recovered in Taganana with entanglement in the neck and right front fin due to raffia and marine debris.
This release was also attended by a group of users of the Red Cross assistance programs for the elderly, who showed their emotion at seeing how the turtles walked the path between the shore and the water.
