SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 14 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER), an entity dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife, has recently joined the ‘Hydrogen Renewable Canary Cluster Cluster’, promoted by the DISA Group and Enagás Renovable, with the aim of contributing to the progressive decarbonisation of the archipelago through the production and consumption of renewable hydrogen.

With the signing of the agreement for its participation in the cluster, ITER supports this project, whose purpose is to promote the production of green hydrogen through the electrolysis of previously desalinated seawater, and its distribution and marketing for various uses related to mobility, heavy transport, port operations, as well as other industrial sectors.

The Minister of Innovation, Enrique Arriaga, explains in a note that “how could it be otherwise, ITER joins this initiative that tries to reduce CO2 emissions in the Canary Islands” and recalls that “the Institute is currently working on several research to develop clean energy, for example, with the study carried out with the ULL on the development and improvement of the stability of photovoltaic cells based on Perovskite, a material that could greatly increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of manufacturing photovoltaic panels”.

This initiative, which has already been presented to the Government of the Canary Islands, aims to obtain public co-financing through the joint presentation of projects to the European ‘Next Generation’ funds to produce green hydrogen in two plants that will be located in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The project has already begun its path to obtain the funds it requires for its materialization, by participating in the call for the ‘H2 Pioneros’ program, launched last February by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving ( IDAE), a body dependent on the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The call is still pending resolution and the promoters of this initiative, which will contribute to the sustainable energy future of the archipelago, hope that the result will be known before the end of 2022.

ITER will contribute to carrying out research, development and scientific and technological innovation actions to ensure the supply of 100% renewable electricity necessary for the production of hydrogen, with a newly built renewable electricity production facility.

CLUSTER MEMBERS

The Canary Islands Renewable Hydrogen Hub Cluster brings together 27 partners, including institutions, companies and public bodies, private companies, technology centers and academic institutions.

Entities related to land transport, the maritime, tourism, technological and university sectors, such as Titsa, Global, Guaguas Municipales, Toyota Canarias, Domingo Alonso Group, Grupo Rivera, the Port Authorities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and de las Palmas, Aena, Canaragua, Damm, Boluda, Navantia, Balearia, Cotenaval, Ashotel, the FEHT, the Satocan Group, Astican, the DAMM Group, Telefónica, the Canary Islands Technological Institute, and the universities of La Laguna, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Galaway, among others.

From the Cabildo they highlight that green hydrogen constitutes a key sustainable solution for the decarbonization of the economy, being part of the solution to achieve climate neutrality in 2050 set in the ‘European Green Park’.
