An enriching tourism proposal for Anaga

Anaga Biofest celebrates its second edition by expanding its headquarters and with the endorsement of the success of participation and satisfaction of those who enjoyed all its activities last year. Between October 21 and November 1, it once again offers responsible and value-added activities in nature, an appointment with awareness with Anaga.

La Laguna -between the 21st and the 23rd of this month- and Tegueste -between the 28th of October and the 1st of November- will be the venues for the second edition of the Anaga Biofest, a meeting that proposes enjoying the biosphere reserve of a more comprehensive way, not only for those who visit Anaga and want to leave a positive return for the environment, but also so that those who live in it can benefit in a tangible way from this conscientious tourism.

The festival highlights the territory declared as the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve with a program of events and socio-cultural activities, in collaboration with different local entities, which revolve around various lines of work: supporting the local economy, mitigating and offset the carbon footprint, promote inclusive tourism, promote equality, taste Km0 gastronomy, reduce the impact on the local population thanks to access by public transport, and learn about the flora, fauna, customs and uses of the area visited. All these objectives are carried out through activities and workshops such as bird photography, hiking, cocktails, pottery making workshops or the so-called Entre lecheras y gangocheras, an itinerary of low difficulty that involves several local women who help the traveler to understand part of the history of the municipality.

The programming and inscriptions are already open in your Web, where you can choose from unique activities to experience packages depending on the type of visitor. The offer is multidisciplinary, aimed at lovers of nature, active leisure, gastronomy and ethnography. More than 300 participants participated in its first edition and more than 50 local actors and companies from the northeast region of Tenerife were involved, with a remarkably high average rating and a loyalty rate of 9 out of 10 people.

This project is supported by key agents and entities from the municipalities of Tegueste, La Laguna, the Northeast Region of Tenerife and the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve as a whole. The people and companies that are in charge of guiding and coordinating all the activities receive a fair price for their services, so that the festival contributes to the socioeconomic revitalization at the local level. It is the result of a participatory vision of the tourist management of a destination, also involving the resident population.

To minimize the global carbon footprint of the event, they claim public transport as a formula for sustainable mobility and, in addition, after the 2022 edition, with the involvement of the resident population and local groups, activities will be organized to plant native fruit trees on farms located within the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve, through land stewardship agreements.

They have also considered giving greater visibility to the gender perspective, making known the importance of the figure of women, often undervalued, showing their importance in the socioeconomic and cultural sphere of rural societies like this one. Likewise, it aims to promote inclusive tourism offering equal opportunities for the enjoyment of responsible leisure for all people regardless of their condition or degree of functional or sensory disability, always in a safe, comfortable, autonomous and normalized way.

This festival not only minimizes its environmental footprint in the territory, it also takes an active role in promoting performances that make a positive difference in the environment. To this end, activities are carried out in parallel to improve roads, trails and different resources and environmental spaces, such as, for example, the placement of nest boxes to contribute to the recovery of native and endemic bird populations, among other actions.

Biofest claims that eating can be an act of recognition and support of the local primary sector, of traditions and customs linked to the territory. In this sense, gastronomy based on unique local products is very present at the festival, both with differentiated activities in the program, and with others integrated as complementary proposals.

The activities are designed to generate unique experiences, so the size of the groups will be reduced, to achieve a close relationship and to generate a framework for exchange and mutual knowledge between the participants and the local agents involved in the festival.
