The users of the David González pool and the federated teams that train in the Paco Álvarez pavilion have already received notice that, as of this Saturday, the former, and on the 30th, the latter, will no longer have access to the facilities attached to the Municipal Pavilion, since the procedures for the start of construction of the new GO fit Sports Complex in Santa Cruz will begin. This involves the demolition of the Paco Álvarez, as well as the squash courts and the half-finished building next to them. This was announced yesterday by the Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, who explained that starting this Saturday, the pool and court facilities will begin to be dismantled to make way for the shovels that will be in charge of demolishing the buildings.

“We are facing a work that will make a large facility available to Santa Cruz, which will be able to serve between 10,000 and 15,000 people, compared to the 1,000 who currently use the facilities,” said Cebrián.

And it is that the company awarded the work and the subsequent management of this Sports Complex, GO fit, will make available to the chicharreros two parking floors, plus another two for sports of all kinds. “Only the bodybuilding room will have 1,700 square meters,” explained the mayor of Sports.

As for the pools, there will be three pools, one of 25 meters, another for splashing and one more for jets. “There will also be a toy library and a cafeteria, in addition to the more than 200 parking spaces that will be made available to users and the replacement of the squash courts,” said Cedrián.

Although the work will take about two years, the schedules and cost for users who enjoy these facilities are already being considered. “If we look at the hours that GO fit has in other facilities, such as the one it manages in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we would be talking about opening from Monday to Friday from six in the morning to eleven at night, while on Saturdays They would open from seven to ten at night and on Sundays from 8:00 to 14:00,” he said.

Regarding the price for using the sports complex, “also taking other centers as an example, we would be talking about a bonus of between 38 and 40 euros, with which you would have access to the entire facility. If you are only interested in a specific activity, you can also choose that option”, explained Cebrián.

The councilor clarified that these data are applicable to the part that the concessionaire will manage, since, with regard to the new Paco Álvarez and the new squash courts that will be built, “the management, as now, will be municipal, so the teams will be able to continue using them as before”.

The mayor of Sports defended the importance of having a facility of this type in the center of Santa Cruz, “which can be used by about 15,000 people” and that will make available to residents “a lot of different sports activities”.

transferred equipment

The beginning of the works has forced to look for new training points for the federated teams and the users of the pool. Thus, the latter have been relocated to the Acidalio Lorenzo and Añaza pools. In the case of tennis, users have been directed to the Tío Pino courts, which are already operational, while squash practice has been relocated to Las Retamas.
In the case of volleyball, teams like Cuesta Piedra, which trains at Paco Álvarez, will now train at Quico Cabrera and at the La Salud school. In the case of basketball, whose teams include Unelco, he will train at the Tomé Cano school and in Valleseco.

The councilor for the Salud-La Salle district, Carlos Tarife, insisted on the importance of having such an important sports space that, “if the stadium finally moves and they give us that space, we would be talking about the most important sports block in the Canary Islands” .

To build the new sports complex, it will be necessary to demolish the Paco Álvarez pavilion, the annex, the swimming pool and the squash courts.

Open day at the Tío Pino Tennis School

The award of the construction and management of the new sports complex in Santa Cruz to the GO fit companies involved the construction of the Municipal Tennis School on the existing courts in the Tío Pino neighborhood, at no cost to the City Council. These new installations are already finished . These are made up of three tennis courts and one more of a multi-sports nature, which will be put into use this Saturday with a free open day. The aim of this activity is for the neighbors to get to know the facilities and to practice tennis, thus encouraging them to pick up a racket.
