SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 7 (EUROPE PRESS) –

Metrotenerife, a transport company of the Cabildo de Tenerife, has received a new international distinction from the railway sector.

On this occasion it is the prestigious ‘Global Light Rail Awards’ that recognized the Tenerife operator’s Green Bond Issue as one of the best initiatives in sustainability and the environment.

The island councilor for Mobility and president of Metrotenerife, Enrique Arriaga, and the island director for Mobility, José Alberto León, together with the team in charge of managing the complex Green Bond Issuance operation carried out by the company in 2021, collected this distinction at the ceremony held this week in London, where the main European railway operators met.

Enrique Arriaga highlights in a note that in recent weeks several distinctions have been received by the guided transport sector.

“A few days ago we obtained the ERCI Innovation Award for the removable rail insulating jacket and now we are recognized at the Global Light Rail Awards for our Green Bond Issue. In addition, in this same edition, we have been one of the three companies nominated for ‘ Best Operator of the Year’, together with two other European railway companies”, he indicates.

All this demonstrates, in his opinion, that “at Metrotenerife we are working in the right direction to be a competitive and innovative company, as well as committed to sustainability by launching initiatives that promote the defense of the environment, without a doubt, these recognitions reward the high qualification of our staff and strengthen the company’s position in the world railway market”.

Green Bonds are a type of debt issued by organizations, both public and private, and are used exclusively to finance or refinance, in part or in full, socially responsible projects with the environment.

In the case of Metrotenerife, they are used for green and ecological transport projects such as Tranvía de Tenerife and have made it possible to refinance the debt contracted for the construction and commissioning of the current Lines 1 and 2 of the Tram.

In this sense, remember that Metrotenerife is the only company in the Canary Islands that has issued Green Bonds, in line with the Sustainable Transport and Mobility policies set to meet the challenges of the Green Pact of the European Union and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the international community.

In previous editions of the ‘Global Light Rail Awards’, Metrotenerife has been awarded for its removable insulating rail jacket (2021), for the Ten+VAO app (2018) and for the Onboard Speed Monitoring System (Simove, 2017) .

The ‘Global Light Rail Awards’ are organized each year by Mainspring, a relevant publishing company in the railway world, and represent one of the greatest recognitions of excellence and innovation in this sector.
