Podemos breaks the agreement and leaves the government of Pedro Martín in the minority

«We can withdraw support for Pedro Martín in the Cabildo de Tenerife». The purple party’s statement on social networks causes a political earthquake in the early afternoon. The insular group of Sí Podemos Canarias, of which the councilors María José Belda, David Carballo and Cristo González are part –replaced Ruth Acosta this year–, supports the PSOE and Ciudadanos government from outside. If this rupture of the agreement reached at the beginning of the current mandate is confirmed, in 2019, the Executive will remain in the minority seven months before the elections and with the budgets for next year on the horizon. However, just a few hours later, Belda, the spokeswoman, distanced herself from a “unilateral” decision that she understands to be “a serious error.”

The Podemos Canarias tweet justifies the rupture in which the PSOE “promotes policies of destruction in the Cabildo.” He adds: “It will be without our support. By Adeje, Fonsalía, the Circuit of the Engine, the Tren del Sur and so many other struggles». Among these demands stands out the frontal opposition to the Cuna del Alma urbanization, which is being built in Puertito de Adeje, for three reasons: «The violent episodes –between activists and the company–, for denying their competences in the works and for accusing the General Directorate of Patrimony of the Canary Islands Government –in the hands of Podemos– of the situation of the protest camp”.

CC-PNC considers that the institution “is in a serious crisis and it is bad for everyone”

They describe the balance of external support for the island government for three years as “very negative”, for which “our role in the Cabildo changes.” And they sentence: “The loss of confidence is irreversible.” The directors Carballo and González endorse the decision with their assessments, included in the thread. The same as Laura Fuentes, general coordinator of Podemos Canarias.

“one-sided decision”

The position of the spokesperson for the purples in the Cabildo, María José Belda, differs completely from that taken by the organization that, in theory, she represents. Belda is conclusive: “They make a unilateral decision without having their spokesperson in the Cabildo.”

From New York, where she goes to defend the Saharawi cause before the UN, Belda expresses her surprise because “we were in negotiations with Sí Se Podemos and Equo, which make up Sí Podemos Canarias in the Cabildo, to hold a meeting next Tuesday in which decide whether or not to support the PSOE in the budgets. Until today (yesterday), there is no agreement between the three parties that make up the coalition -Yes We Can, Equo Podemos Canarias-». He considers that “this consensus is a fundamental factor in taking this step.”

The one who was a signatory of the programmatic agreement in 2019 – a few days ago she offered her experience for the next mandate “from the left” – clarifies: “I have been the one who has put on the table whether or not we are going to continue with this support from outside , but what has been done is a huge mistake. She points out Belda “many reasons” to “abandon the support”, including Cradle of the Soul or the Motor Circuit. But she adds that “I hoped that on Tuesday all the political groups would agree on what our position would be. The statement is a mistake. Belda understands that “this agreement should have been taken by the group and never by a party unilaterally. It is not a decision of Sí Podemos Canarias ».
