“A good man”. This is how the mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, defined Antonio Santos, former councilor of the City Council, local businessman and co-founder and president of the San Isidro Basketball Club, who died in July 2018, to whom the Plenary unanimously agreed yesterday to grant him the title of Villero de Posthumous honor. The recognition is accompanied by the labeling of a street in his name, specifically, the section that runs between the Church of La Concepción and Plaza Patricio García.
The initiative started from two different groups of friends who came together to present a common proposal. Among them is Isidoro Sánchez, present at the session, who was also his partner at the Municipal Corporation.
Linares highlighted that in addition to his participation in public life as a councilor in difficult years, Antonio Santos was a person who had a great involvement in the cultural, social, commercial and sports life of the municipality, highlighting his role in the San Isidro basketball club.
“Possibly that the club is alive now is perhaps because in very difficult times, he put his person, his knowledge and money out of his pocket, so that he could continue,” said the president.
In addition, he added, he has collaborated on an individual level in “absolute” anonymity with many people. Linares had nothing but praise for Antonio Santos. “No one ever found the door of his house and his business closed and he was one of the pioneers in feminizing the commercial sector with the utmost respect,” he finally said, while asking for applause on his behalf. of the.
The Plenary also unanimously agreed -only the PSOE abstained- to request free Regular Passenger Transport in the Canary Islands, both by bus and by tram, given “the comparative grievance that exists with respect to the peninsula”.
A motion that led to a great debate was the one presented by the Assembly for La Orotava so that public toilets in squares and parks can be accessed without having to consume in cafeterias and even when the concessions end, as happened with the Plaza de Los Virgueritos. The proposal was left on the table to raise it in the Services Commission and seek a solution.
