The first Casa del Mayor in the municipality of La Laguna will be located on Calle Marqués de Celada, specifically, in the restored building located in the old bus depot, which is currently partly occupied by a supermarket but where, in addition, “We have 900 square meters of municipal land, as part of the urban agreement that was agreed upon at the time”, explained the Councilor for Social Welfare, Rubens Ascanio.

A space in which “we have a project valued at more than 600,000 euros of investment, to develop the first Home for the Elderly and a Day Center for people with physical disabilities”, announced the mayor.

The councilor recalled that in a recent budget modification approved in the municipal plenary session, the economic item for carrying out the civil works project for the adaptation and conditioning of the space was already included, “and then, in the 2023 budget, the 600,000 euros of the work”, he pointed out.

Specifically, some of the work to be carried out inside the building will be the internal divisions of the spaces, the false ceilings, the bathrooms on both floors, the elevator, “and in the back there will be some windows, because it is currently closed , and there will be a multifunctional area for talks, workshops, physical activity…”, he explained. “It will have modern structures, climatically appropriate, with all the elements established by current regulations, adapted bathrooms and everything equipped for the elderly,” said the councilor in this regard.

Rubens Ascanio announced that the works, “although they have a significant amount, in principle they are simple, and we hope that the work will start in the first quarter of 2023 and be completed before the end of the year.”

“revolutionary space”

In this building, the Casa del Mayor “will occupy most of the space, where the Father Anchieta Pensioner Home will be, they will have their activities, it will be their main headquarters, and we will have a gym, an area for grandsons and granddaughters, a kitchen area, for workshops…”, highlighted the councilor. “It will be a revolutionary space in the field of care for the elderly,” he emphasized.

But, “it will also house the first Day Center for people with physical disabilities in one of the wings of the building, which is at street level”, of which there are few on the Island and “it is very necessary”, Ascanio said.
