Adrian Delgado Rodriguez At 24, he is already the youngest high school director in Spain. Since July, this Santacrucero has directed the IES Tamaimo, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, where he has already taught classes and, not satisfied with this, also aspires to become the youngest educational inspector in the country.

-Doesn’t it make you dizzy to run an institute at the age of 24, when just a few years ago you were a simple student?

“I assume the direction of IES Tamaimo with the commitment to work to improve our education. Being a teacher and studying law at the UNED allows for a broader vision of how to improve the system. The management team is solvent by combining renewal with the experience represented by colleagues with many years of accumulated teaching”.

Do you have a family background in teaching?
“Nope. I dedicate myself to teaching by vocation, because I consider that it is the best tool to achieve a better society”
– I suppose that it is not the same to give classes, which he has done for two years, than to direct an entire center?
“It is different, but complementary and necessary. I believe that all teachers must assume responsibilities that allow us to know the educational system to give a better response to students”.
-Why did you choose IES Tamaimo?
“Even though I’m from Santa Cruz, I asked for this center because I already knew it from having taught classes.”

-What have been the main problems you have encountered at the beginning of the course?
“The truth is that we are very happy, although we have encountered two problems, such as the new curricular regulations, which we have to apply if it is still approved and adapt extracurricular activities to normal after COVID.”

-Where have you studied?
“I studied Geography and History at the University of La Laguna, and later the master’s degree in Teacher Training. Now I continue studying Law at the UNED”.
–And doesn’t it make you sad that Geography and History are neglected?
“It is a matter that they intend to offend, but it is key in the development of an integral and critical personality for young people who need a personalized response.”

-If you have already reached the direction of a center at the age of 24, what is the next obstacle to overcome in your meteoric career?

“I am looking to break another record and be the youngest inspector in Spain. I intend to put the inspection at the service of education and that it is not perceived as a repressive element for the teaching staff”.

-We talk about how bad education is and yet we keep hearing that this is the best prepared youth in history. They were?

“Both are true, because young people have been trained in a system that has not taught us to respond to socially relevant situations. Surviving in a hostile work environment has led this generation to give the best of themselves and achieve the greatest challenges”.

-Is technology harming language and Humanities degrees?
“Technology has always been present in education. Teachers must teach how to make good use of digital Humanities for the progress”.

-Santiago del Teide is distinguished by having half of the population of foreign origin. Does the same thing happen in high school?
“In the institute, students of diverse origins coexist who understand that the values that we transmit for a citizenship of the future are above their origin or any condition.”
