Several regular fishermen on the coast of Santa Úrsula have complained in recent days about the large amount of garbage that has been found on the coast of the northern municipality, where bottles, plastic cutlery, cans, bags have been seen among the rocks. and remains of organic waste.

A reader of DIARIO DE AVISOS has indicated that “there are four or five fishing boats in the area and people arrive from all over the island, because it is the season of the dorados and that specific point is a place of passage for this species.” In addition, he adds, “boys go below and throw lead at them”, with the consequent harm to the animals.

It is difficult to define the border between the municipality of La Victoria de Acentejo and that of Santa Úrsula, “but the gold ones are more on the Santa Úrsula side”, points out one of the people outraged with the dirt found in recent days.

In this sense, he criticizes the “uncivil” behavior of some fishermen who have set up a tent to spend the night in this enclave on the Acentejo coast, which is part of the protected natural area of the same name and which includes a narrow strip of 401 hectares of extension, which runs along the coastline of Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria, La Orotava and Santa Úrsula.

Like other similar spaces, this nucleus is ordered by a special plan whose draft was presented by the Cabildo de Tenerife in April 2019.

Consulted on this matter, the Councilor for Agriculture and the Environment of the latter municipality, Yanira Gutiérrez, recalls that there is a fence that prohibits access to the area with a sign that warns of the danger. She even remembers that there have been deaths due to the fact that it is a steep and steep area, with several bars; therefore, “it is irresponsible” to do so.

In fact, adds the councillor, “the City Council cannot take the risk and send municipal workers to undertake the cleaning of that space”, although, she clarifies, its maintenance is not the responsibility of the Consistory.
