The Canary Islands have already guaranteed 2,022 million euros from the Next Generation EU European instrument, both in React-EU funds and the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR), according to the Canarian Vice President and Minister of Finance, Budgets and European Affairs , Román Rodríguez, during a meeting with the Charter 100 association, of business and professional women.
Rodríguez highlighted that the amount represents 84.9% of the funds that the Government of the Canary Islands calculates that it will receive to execute directly until 2026 and that they amount, according to his estimates, to 2,380 million euros (629 million from React-EU and 1,750 million of the MRR).
With regard to React-EU, whose deadline is December 2023, the Canarian Executive will end this year with an execution of 517 million euros, with which another 112 million will remain pending.
In relation to the MRR, which has a term of execution until the year 2026, the vice president explained that 1,393 million euros have already been programmed and that this year will end with an execution of 267 million euros, “which tells us that we have started deploying these resources properly and we will be able to meet the targets because we still have another four years to go.
Rodríguez insisted, in any case, that the Next Generation EU instrument is only one of the legs of the Autonomous Community’s income scheme, together with ordinary European funds, State transfers and own taxes.
In this sense, the vice president stressed that the amount of the extraordinary reconstruction funds is not as high as is believed and recalled that the ordinary items of the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework will mean some 5,075 million euros for the Canary Islands. “This gives us a very clear idea of the situation and the limitation of those extraordinary funds to completely transform the economy.”
“It is evident that they can contribute to this transformation, but for this we must be able to adjust the projects to the objectives set by the European Union”, emphasized the vice-president.
