The microalgae (extraordinary blooms of cyanobacteria) have boycotted the bath to the people of Tenerife in the so-called bonanza season, a period in which the calm sea, the predominance of breezes and the highest water temperature of the year converge.
Since last week, numerous coastlines in the southeast of the Island have been affected by this proliferation, which brings with it Brown spots and a smell similar to “rotten wood”, as witnesses to the phenomenon have described to this newspaper.
Precisely this Sunday City Hall of Candelaria advised against bathing on its beaches after the detection of microalgae. Although it has emphasized the non-linkage of its presence with some type of discharge from the municipality’s outfalls, which have a continuous control and surveillance plan.
A trail of cyanobacteria that, apparently, has also been located this Monday morning on the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, specifically in the neighborhood of San Andrés.
And it is that, according to the neighbors, “the children who have bathed near the microalgae have suffered itchy skin.” At the moment, the City Council has not ruled on the matter.
