He says that the Canary Islands are no longer “weepy”, but “proactive”
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The general secretary of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has stated that he is facing the next regional elections with the aspiration of “making history” and being the first socialist to repeat the Presidency of the regional government thanks to the progress made in this legislature and the response that its Executive has given to the adversities that island society has faced.
This was stated this Saturday during the celebration of the Regional Committee that took place in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) to open the political course.
“In the committee we will give an account of these last three very hard years, a few months before the end of a legislature in which we have had to face many adversities. We overcame one and another appeared,” he explained.
He referred here to the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook, the fires in Gran Canaria, zero energy in Tenerife, the arrival of the pandemic with the first case of Covid-19 in Spain in La Gomera, the confinement, the migration crisis or the ‘Cumbre Vieja’ volcano on La Palma.
THE GOVERNMENT “HAS KNOWN HOW TO RESPOND”
However, the also president of the Canary Islands made special emphasis that his Executive “has been able to respond” to all these circumstances.
In addition, he commented that Public Health has been able this year to open more hospital beds than those that were opened in the last ten years or that Public Education now has free places for children from 0 to 3 years old and about 2,600 more teachers.
Regarding the Ecological Transition, Torres explained that the Government will culminate the legislature with the first Canarian law against climate change and with the competence in matters of Coasts.
Similarly, he recalled issues such as investment in clean energy, the stabilization of public personnel, economic data with the arrival of “big funds” that led to the survival of companies, the road agreement “resolved” or data from the primary sector with the “salvation” of POSEI.
The socialist regional secretary also pointed out that together with his government partners, policies on social rights and “rigor” in the budget framework have been strengthened.
He also stated that the islands are the CCAA that is currently leading the generation of employment and that there have never been so many people working in the archipelago.
ANOTHER FOUR YEARS TO COMPLETE THE JOB
“But let’s not forget those who are having a hard time, and that is why we want to complete the work with another four years if the voters want it, to work hand in hand and achieve a much fairer Canary Islands, which is what is needed,” he said. .
Torres understood that the achievements made in the current legislature make the PSOE aspire to win the next elections and revalidate most of the institutions and the Presidency of the Canary Islands.
“The work has been hard but it has not been done badly, there is the recognition of the citizenship and we want to make history because when a president has repeated he has never been a socialist. Make history to have the Presidency again, change the history of the canaries and that the islands are fairer in social matters,” he observed.
FROM A CANARY ISLANDS THAT COMPLAINED TO ONE THAT “PROPOSES”
For the president, under his Government, the Canary Islands have ceased to be a CCAA that “complained” to be a Canary that “proposes” and is a “leader”.
Asked whether he would prefer to repeat the Presidency alone or by renewing the ‘pact of flowers’, he said that every party always has the highest aspirations and that the goal is to get the largest number of votes possible, “and why not, doing history achieving the first absolute majority in the Canary Islands, which is not easy”.
“From there,” he continued, “if this is not achieved, we will have to sit down to talk with those forces that share a government program with a commitment to public health, education, social rights and social justice, equality and for a Canary that is one”.
UP TO 25 MAYORS OF THE PSOE ASPIRE TO REPEAT CANDIDACY
“The deadline for the presentation of candidacies by the mayors has already been opened. They have until September 15, but today more than 25 mayors have expressed their willingness to repeat in the candidacies, which implies a commitment to the consolidation of the work done,” he said.
Finally, Torres recalled that the PSOE has the largest number of first mayors in the Canary Islands, that it is chaired by the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), that it is in most of the councils and that it chairs the Government of the Canary Islands.
