The Arona Town Hallfrom the Environment and Sustainability area, and through the concessionaire company of the Coastal Management Service, promotes the holding of informative sessions on the coast within the Entre mantelinas Project, whose main objective is to value and publicize the presence of mantelinas or butterfly rays (Gymnura altavela) on the beaches of the municipality, which are in danger of extinction.
Already last summer, the presence of mantain them in the Los Cristianos beach caused more than one surprise to bathers. Then it was thought that “they had taken over the beach” as a result of the absence of bathers during the confinement, something that could be added to the well-known reproductive period of this unique species. It is a unique event in the world, which is repeated every year between the months of August and September, gathering hundreds of mantas for reproduction.
The information sessions, which will be developed by the Canary Islands Ocean, a team made up of marine biologists, began yesterday and will end on Thursday, September 22, focusing mainly on Los Cristianos beach and Las Vistas beach.
During the conference, information will be given to beach users about the habits, distribution and reproduction of mantellines, as well as why they move to our coastline, specifically at this time of year. Likewise, a series of guidelines will be given so that people can approach this species.
Adapted bathroom
The Arona City Council’s adapted bathing service for people with reduced mobility has carried out up to 360 actions during the months of July and August on the three beaches where this resource is available. Salvamento personnel carried out 200 baths in Las Vistas, 140 in Los Cristianos and 20 in Las Galletas (where it is available two days a week).
