The Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain has authorized a new modification of the Direct Management Agreement of the state trading company Waters which now includes 25 million euros for the expansion and remodeling works of the regional treatment plant of the Orotava Valleythe most populated region of the north of Tenerifewith more than 110,000 inhabitants

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martin (PSOE)has indicated that this modification of the agreement allows the extension of the works in the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Cross portlocated in Punta Brava. “Investments that will undoubtedly imply an improvement in water treatment on the island, which will place Tenerife at levels of wastewater treatment of no less than 90% and they will make it possible to make an important qualitative and quantitative leap to avoid the sanctions that the Government of Spain is receiving.”

The Island Water Council of Tenerife is already drafting the project for the remodeling and expansion of the district treatment plant of the Orotava Valley from April 1. «Only the drafting of this project has a cost of 188,251 euros and it is expected to be completed in October of this year. It will be the base document to sign the corresponding agreement of the Cabildo and the Insular Water Council with Acuaes to proceed with the execution of the remodeling and expansion of the treatment plant in the Valle de La Orotava, following the same experience as in other areas such as Granadilla, Arona, San Miguel, Guía de Isora, Santiago del Teide, La Matanza, La Victoria and Santa Úrsula», detailed the insular president.

The drafting of the project costs 188,000 euros and is expected to be finished in October

The current wastewater treatment plant in the Valley of La Orotava It is an old facility built in the 90s of the 20th century and which is currently “clearly insufficient” to collect all the wastewater from the three municipalities of the Valley: Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos and La Orotava.

Since March 2, works have been carried out on the main collectors in La Orotava and Los Realejos, which are the most deficient areas in terms of the sanitation network. 9,721,000 euros are invested in these state works. It is scheduled to end before December of next year 2023.

The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco Gonzalez (PSOE), values the work that has been carried out by the different administrations so that this infrastructure “has both a project and financing very soon”. The president is grateful that the administrations of the island and the State “have made this priority need their own for the entire Valley and for our city.”

This expansion of the treatment plant will allow all the treated wastewater to be regenerated to be used for agricultural irrigation. The project contemplates the expansion of water treatment from the current 6,700 cubic meters per day to about 10,000 cubic meters per day. yese will leave a second phase planned that would serve to treat another 10,000 cubic meters more.

The Island Councilor for Sustainable Development and the Fight Against Climate Change of the Cabildo, Javier Rodriguez, adds that the proposal involves «building new facilities on the land adjacent to the current Punta Brava treatment plant so that they come into operation upon completion and then demolishing the existing plant to build another new facility on top of it that will complete the treatment of 20,000 cubic meters per day with the most modern deodorization systems. In addition, the entire process of the plant will be encapsulated as it has been done in the WWTP of Valle de Güímar and Santa Cruz».
