Yesterday, the twelfth stage of the pilgrimage of the Virgin of Abona brought together the participation of more than 1,100 people on the 3.5-kilometre journey that separates the coastal towns of Abades and El Porís de Abona. Until now, this is the moment with the highest number of pilgrims at this fourth edition of this meeting with Our Lady of Abona, honorary and perpetual mayor of the south of Tenerife and patron saint of the South and of Arico.
One of the most emotional moments experienced during the tour was the meeting between the Virgin of Abona and the Virgin of Fátima, patron saint of Porís. Shortly before reaching the area of La Sarnosa, both images were placed looking towards the neighborhood of La Punta, the only nucleus that is not part of the pilgrimage route because a lot of prominence is reserved for the moment of the Descent. The population of the town that houses the lighthouse greeted with fireworks.
Along the way and already in El Porís de Abona, decorated especially for the occasion, bucios sounded and a party sang. In addition, a poem was read at the mass celebrated upon arrival, as in the three previous editions. It is about the poetry written by a deceased neighbor of the place through which she explains to her granddaughter what Our Lady of Abona represents for her. There was no lack of Ave Maria and fireworks.
The itinerary of the IV Pilgrimage will continue today with the stage that will culminate in Las Eras. On this occasion, the bus will be used as there is no alternative route for the transit of vehicles, as was contemplated from the beginning.
