SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has convened the XXVI edition of the Regional Honey Contest ‘Casa de la Miel de Tenerife’, whose deadline for submitting applications will end on Friday, October 14.

This contest aims to value and disseminate the organoleptic characteristics of the honeys produced on the island and in the Canary Islands, in addition to supporting the professionalization of the sector and the commercial brands of local honeys.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, recalls in a note that “the bee is a key element in maintaining biodiversity and food security”, which makes beekeeping “a subsector of incalculable value to which must continue to be defended and promoted to protect the general interest of the island”.

Parrilla emphasizes the importance of this contest, “with which we will continue to improve the quality of honey from Tenerife and increase its social notoriety”, and emphasizes the added value of the Miel de Tenerife PDO, with its 14 registered varieties, for the gastronomy of the island.

All those beekeepers and beekeepers, natural or legal persons, who produce honey in the Canary Islands and whose farms are registered in the corresponding registry of the Government of the Canary Islands, may participate in this contest.

Within the quality awards, the contestants will be able to present their products in the section of multifloral honeys and monofloral honeys.

The multifloral ones are those in which no specific plant species or group of species predominate (in this group, the following categories will compete: mild, medium and intense), while the monofloral ones are those that come from a flowering or very small group of these (chestnut honey, tedera, tajinaste, avocado, heath, barilla, Teide broom or pennyroyal, among others).

AWARD FOR THE BEST PRESENTATION

The contest will also distinguish the best presentation. In this category, the external appearance, packaging and labeling of the brands presented will be taken into account, and only one sample per commercial brand may be presented.

The submission period will end on October 14 and the awards ceremony is scheduled for November 19.

The application model and the bases are already available at the electronic headquarters of the Cabildo and on the website of the Casa de la Miel and Agrocabildo.

Javier Parrilla recalls that, in just two years, the production of honey with denomination of origin has increased by 76 percent, reaching 22,554 kilos registered in 2021, while the number of hives has gone from 15,705 in 2019 to 16,283 in 2022 .

“Figures that confirm the gradual recovery of the sector and the need to continue promoting measures that contribute to its development and consolidation,” he concludes.
