Digital self-portraits, better known as selfie, have become popular through social networks. The opportunity to immortalize oneself in unique situations has turned it into a practice that is often risky, especially when these take place in an aquatic setting, often unknown to our tourists.

This summer we have witnessed situations, at least, that speak of the unconsciousness of these image hunters, without caring that the red flag was raised or that there was a sea of cam (background). The breaking of the waves on the volcanic rocks or against a pier, as a photography background, was the objective to be hunted, even at the cost of getting a good scare or in worse cases, being wallowed until drowning by that sea, which never you must turn your back on it.

Many of these foreign tourists -although there are also natives, who take risks in puddles, puffers and cliffs- are unaware of the behavior of our tides and are not attentive to alerts or alarms due to rough seas, something that is intended to be corrected with daily information. in hotel establishments, although the same is not done in the increasingly used vacation homes.

Nor is it that they pay much attention to the red flags on our beach, as happened a few days ago in Punta Larga (Candelaria), when a young man ignored the lifeguards and jumped into the water, having to be rescued shortly after, when the Local Police I was waiting to draw up a sanction of 200 euros.

More drownings this yeareither

In the absence of knowing the data for August, in which the Italian swimmer found a few days ago in Almáciga should be included, in the Canary Islands the number of people killed by drowning It has exceeded in the first seven months of the year those of the same period in 2021 (35 by 27), according to figures from the exemplary association Canary Islands 1,500 kilometers of coastlineby our colleague Sebastián Quintana, who highlights, contrary to what happens in Spain, 80% of those affected are foreigners and the main cause is “recklessness”, while the drowning of canaries is basically focused on fishermen Coast.

In Spain, deaths from drowning have exceeded those of last year. In 2021, 260 people died, and this year there are already 264. The beaches continue to be the black spot: 107 people drowned, 33 in swimming pools and 32 in rivers.
