SAN SEBASTIAN DE LA GOMERA, 27 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, has called for combating the current energy crisis by intensifying the development of projects linked to renewable energies on the islands.

In a statement, the island’s top leader referred to the approval of the Royal Decree on energy saving measures at the national level and which includes the rules to reduce consumption before the arrival of winter.

Although he stressed that, to a large extent, it is a rule aimed at mitigating the effects of a possible lack of raw material for energy production, he emphasized that it should be taken as “a turning point that leads us to prioritize all the actions planned towards the energy transition”.

“The geographical conditions of the Canary Islands make the islands a place that brings together all the favorable parameters to give continuity to the implementation of solar and wind energy, in addition to exploring other ways that are aimed at using the possibilities that the sea gives us”, I observe.

In addition, he highlighted the progress made in La Gomera over the last three years, “in which we have planned a program of measures aimed at energy self-sufficiency, sustainable mobility and ecological transition.”

In this line, he explained that the five wind farms that will cover the current energy demand of the island are already being built, and that they join incentives promoted by the Island Council for the installation of solar energy in homes and companies, as well as those planned for the acquisition of electric vehicles.

“This is a path of no return. The conflict in Ukraine has alerted us to a situation that will have effects on Europe’s economy, due to energy dependence. However, we have the tools to avoid a greater impact if we intensify the implementation of projects such as those that are carried out in La Gomera”, he concluded.
