The Council of Tenerife approves, with the vote against PSOE and Cs, partners of the island government, requesting the Executive of Spain extend free regular public passenger transport in Tenerife, both in buses and by tram, between September 1 and December 31 next. It is the result of the extraordinary insular plenary session convened at the request of the Canarian Coalition already late in August, usually non-working.

The monographic session had a single item on the agenda but was voted on five times based on the different amendments from the political groups. The original CC text was “enriched” with the contributions from the Popular Party and Sí Podemos Canarias who voted in favor of the initiative even though he supports the island government from outside. The result was 16 votes in favor and 10 against (5 of the 31 directors were absent from this session, a traditionally vacation month).

Canarian Coalition has seen its part of the text approved in which it urges that from September 1 to December 31, 2022, the recurring vouchers for Titsa and Metropolitano de Tenerife SA are free and under the same conditions, in as to use and management offered by the State to the rest of the citizens of this country.

CC also requests that the Cabildo de Tenerife claim the Canary Islands Government and this, in turn, requires the State, “a financial compensation for the cost to offer citizens this help, neither more nor less than what is offered to the rest of the Spanish”.

Finally, ask the State for aSubsidy to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands that allows maintaining the discount of at least 50% to public passenger transport from January 2023.

For its part, the PP contributes to a document that the Cabildo de Tenerife, “in line with the agreement approved unanimously by all the groups present in this corporation in the last debate of the State of the Island (April of this year), it will extend the gratuity of recurring use vouchers for university students, patients of the reference hospitals (HIUC and La Candelaria) and those over 65 years of age throughout 2023, in order to promote the use of public transport over private transport, help these groups in the current situation economy, as well as to mitigate traffic collapses on highways during peak hours. For this “both the Central Government and the Government of the Canary Islands will be urged to co-finance said measure.”

Finally, within the consensual wording of this improvised “tripartite”, Sí Podemos Canarias includes accelerating compliance with the point approved in the plenary commission on April 27, 2022: “The creation of a specific title for people who, living in Tenerife, are not formally registered since today the impossibility of benefiting from the bonuses for residents without registering continues to exist.
