“We are not second-class citizens. We deserve the greatest respect and health care in the same conditions as the rest of the citizenry”. Under this premise, more than 300 people -according to the organizers- demonstrated yesterday through the streets of San Andrés to demand “dignified healthcare” in Anaga, which translates into a permanent emergency service, a pediatrician throughout the day, a better care from doctors and more days to perform tests, among other claims.
The call was organized by the El Pescador Neighborhood Association and was joined by residents of Igueste, San José de Suculum, Cueva Bermeja and María Jiménez, also users of the San Andrés health center, where more than 7,000 people are treated. It is the second protest that the neighbors carry out in three months – the first was on May 7 – given that none of the exposed requests were heard despite the promises of the health officials.
The demonstration started after 11:00 a.m. from the Wall at the height of the tower, and when it reached the Avenida Marítima, more participants began to join carrying Canarian flags and banners as well as hats and bottles of water that helped to withstand the intense heat reach the cultural center of the neighborhood.
There, the president of the aforementioned neighborhood association, Gabriel Rodríguez, read a manifesto in which he criticized “the carelessness and indifference of a Ministry of Health” that “forgets the people who suffer from the malfunction of a medical office where the Complaints are increasing and solutions to problems are not forthcoming”.
From the platform Together for Anaga they warn that “if the solutions do not come, the next protest will be held one or two months before the next elections to involve more people.”
