This was announced in a joint press conference by the president of the Council, Pedro Martín, and the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, who have agreed that the a “new stage” in which all options will be analyzed from the environmental, territorial and socioeconomic point of view.

This document, which is scheduled to be awarded in the coming weeks, will analyze a total of four alternatives. The first one is what has been called the “zero alternative” and implies not executing any type of measure.

This agreement is intended to prevent it from becoming a matter of debate in the next congresses of the PSOE

The second option is to retake the works of the Port of Fonsalía, an installation that has been the subject of controversy in recent weeks. In this sense, Sebastián Franquis explained that the intention is to have a new Environmental Impact Statement, since the previous one is expired since December 22, 2018.

A third alternative focuses on the own infrastructure of Los Cristianos. As announced, in this case the aim is to analyze the possibilities of both expanding the facility and improving the communications network between the pier and the city, which is one of the proposals raised especially by the mayor of Arona, José Juián Mena.

Finally, this study to be commissioned by the two institutions also intends to assess the possibility of using the rest of the island’s port facilities. Specifically, it considers both adapt the Port of Granadilla to handle passenger traffic and merchandise how to use Santa Cruz of Tenerife since it is the place of origin of most of the inter-island travelers.

The regional councilor advanced that he hopes to explain in the Canary Islands Parliament the details of this study, the results of which are expected to be completed by the middle of next 2022. It will also maintain meetings with different economic and social agents in order to achieve “the greatest possible consensus” and definitively “settle” this project, which comes from 1992.

Franquis has also guaranteed that this agreement will prevent it from being a matter of debate in the next congresses of the PSOE. “We want this new stage to end the problems of Los Cristianos and do not take all the years of the previous project, “he added.
