The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the area of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, has published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) the call for subsidies for the financing of the current expenses of the brotherhoods of fishermen of the Island, with a total amount of 158,000 euros. The deadline to access these grants will end on Thursday, September 2 of this year.
The insular head of the area, Javier Parrilla, recalled that this is “an aid that will complement the work of the fishermen’s guilds” and added that work at sea is “a traditional activity of economic and social weight in the Canary Islands“.
“On the island of Tenerife, fishing contributes directly to the development of the Island, by supplying the population with fish of local origin and keeping more than 200 boats employing about 650 people; and indirectly, through all related companies and sectors such as points of sale and restoration, distribution, fishing tourism or sale of consumables, “he said.
Parrilla recalled that the brotherhoods “are sustained by contributions from the brotherhoods and activities that generate income, such as fishmongers, restaurants, dry dock, use of a crane and subsidies they receive from the administrations.”
“Their survival guarantees the origin of the fishing, as well as its legality, since one of its essential functions is the identification of the caught fish using labels, in accordance with the provisions of European regulations,” he stressed.
As of today, the application form and the bases are available to interested parties at the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife electronic headquarters (https://sede.tenerife.es/). Likewise, they may request information about them in the Agrarian Extension and Rural Development Agencies of the Corporation through the citizen service telephone number 901.501.901.
