A guided tour of the Villa under the title La Orotava: history of repression will take place on August 18. In it, an itinerary will be carried out following steps, elements, buildings and historical facts related to this theme and that are part of local history. «During the civil war (1936-1939) and the immediate post-war period, a series of repressive actions were applied by the winning side towards certain groups of the population who, for different reasons, such as being republican or ideologically on the left, were against or they posed a risk to the coup plotters. For this reason, this route is important in the recovery of historical memory and proposes a tour of the main points of the municipality that take us back to a historical past full of protagonists, both actors and victims, of repression, violence, humiliation and imprisonment,” reports the Orotavense City Council in a press release.
“The working group formed by the graduate in Tourism and the graduate in History of the Sustainable La Orotava 21-22 project has organized this new route through the historic complex of the Villa”, specifies the Consistory. The tour will begin in the plaza of the Church of San Juan Bautista in Villa Arriba, which was a settlement area for the popular classes and where the headquarters of the leftist organizations were installed, and will continue to the place where the barracks were located. of the Spanish Falange that was in Hermano Apolinar street.
Although the route is free, the number of places is limited, so it will be necessary to register by calling 922 32 44 44 (extension 2239) or by email at [email protected].
