Peter Martinpresident of the Cabildo de Tenerifehighlights “the boost in research that the National Volcanological Center from Tenerife will provide”. It takes for granted the designation of the Island as the headquarters of the new state center although, for the moment, there is no official appointment beyond that it will be in the Canary Islands and of good intentions. He had advanced it in the last plenary session of the course, on July 29, when he revealed a conversation in this regard with the president of the Government of the Canary Islands.
From the meeting held in Lanzarote between Angel Victor Torres and his counterpart in the State, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that the headquarters of the new Vulcanological Agency would be in the Archipelago. At the moment nothing has been officially said that it will be located in Tenerife and, even yesterday, the candidacy of La Palma was known, where the most recent eruption in the history of Spain, that of Tajogaite in Cumbre Vieja, has taken place. The island president links the establishment of the institution in Tenerife with the work carried out by Involcan and its studies on volcanoes around the world.
It should be remembered in this regard that The National Geographic Institute (IGN) is the body that establishes the volcanic risk guidelinewhile Involcan is dedicated to advisory and support work with special emphasis on Tenerife and with a prominent role in the recent processes of El Hierro and La Palma.
Pedro Martín expresses his “satisfaction” for the installation in Tenerife of the National Volcanological Center, a decision that he values since “for a few months the president, Ángel Víctor, and I have talked about the fact that the headquarters of the National Volcanological Center should be in Tenerife ». Finally, “this circumstance has occurred,” says Martín.
“On the Island we have been carrying out permanent research in this area for years and the Cabildo dedicates an important economic contribution to studies on volcanology,” indicates the president. He emphasizes: «No one would understand that Tenerife was not the place chosen for this national center».
Martin adds: «Tenerife becomes the volcanological research center of all of Spain, which will further boost research in these scientific fields.” He adds that “in addition, it has the support and financing of the State and the Government of the Canary Islands.” He concludes: “The work carried out by Involcan in research and prevention against volcanic risk will be ratified if possible.”
The Tenerife research institute had a prominent presence in the recent volcanological episode of La Palma, where it played a fundamental role. Around 30 people worked on the ground and many others monitored the process from outside. Tenerife has been a reference in this last volcanic crisis to make more predictive and reliable models that can serve as advice, support and guidance to any research center or institution that needs it.
Involcan is the scientific institution to which researchers from all over the world have resorted the most. During the La Palma eruption, 86 from 36 universities and institutions from 15 countries participated.
