The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutierrezargues that the Tenerife Tram can take advantage of the measures of transportation bonus approved this Monday by the Council of Ministers. For this reason, he has transferred to the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, the need to initiate the appropriate steps before the Government of the Canary Islands, the Ministry of Transport and the Presidency of the Government of Spain “so that the residents of the metropolitan area of Tenerife can enjoy the same aid, and under the same conditions, as the citizens of the peninsular territory and the Balearic Islands with subsidies for rail transport”, the mayor pointed out.

“The measures announced by President Pedro Sánchez represent a fundamental step in our commitment to the promotion of public transport, sustainable mobility and, in particular, with energy savings in the face of the crisis situation generated by the war in Ukraine”, says the mayor. “That is why we consider that the Tram should not be left out of this line of aid, since we are talking about a medium that in 2021 moved more than 12.5 million passengers.”

Last Monday, the Council of Ministers approved the Royal Decree-Law on economic sustainability measures in the field of transport which, among other actions, articulates the gratuity of the Cercanías, Rodalies and conventional Media Distancia services for recurring users between 1 September and December 31, as announced by President Pedro Sánchez in the Debate on the State of the Nation.

In accordance with this measure, which is part of the energy saving plan and discounts for public transport, the Government will discount 100% of recurring rail transport in the Balearic Islands and increase the discount for buses in the Canary Islands from 30% to 50%. .

“In the same way that the Royal Decree-Law contemplates free train transport in the Balearic Islands, we understand that the Canary Islands, which do not have a rail network, should benefit in a similar way in metropolitan transport,” defends Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.

The mayor of La Laguna values ”the effort of the National Government to respond to an exceptional situation, derived from the increase in energy prices throughout Europe, and also to attend to the particularities of the island territories, favoring sustainability and social and territorial cohesion, as expressed by President Pedro Sánchez himself”.

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez invites “all the public administrations of the Archipelago, and especially those of the island of Tenerife”, to join this initiative “which will help alleviate the consequences of the energy crisis on citizens, while It contributes to promoting public transport and reducing the use of private vehicles, which will favor the reduction of our energy dependence and reduce our carbon footprint”.
