A senator from Compromís denounces the dragging of cattle as animal abuse

The dragging of cattle consists of the transfer of different elements and weights placed on a corsa (wooden support) in cows and bulls in tests of strength and speed. Mulet details that, in the Grand Final of the XXXIII Dragging Contest of the Island of Gran Canaria, held on July 11, cows, bulls and oxen were forced to pull loads of up to 1,500 kilos in races against the clock.

The competitions are held mainly in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, backed by the recovery of a supposedly deep-rooted tradition and to the promotion and breeding of the cattle of the native Canarian and Palmera races, reasons both questioned and denied by the veterinary association. The senator asked the Government for a state regulation to prohibit this and other practices of animal abuse for leisure and entertainment purposes.
