The Social Welfare Area of the City Council of La Laguna will allocate 30,000 euros to finance the Kangaroo Project during the second half of this year, an initiative of the Association for the Social Reintegration of Minors Anchieta that allows it to offer a free 24-hour “nursery” service for single mother families and at risk of social exclusion.
This program allows care for 30 boys and girls up to 12 years of age, all with flexible schedules and adapted to the individual needs of family reconciliation, so that mothers without support networks and limited economic resources can work or continue their training to gain access to a job and thus improve their socio-economic situation.
The Councilor for Social Welfare, Rubens Ascanio, highlights that “this initiative is a fundamental complement to the Network of Municipal Nursery Schools, in which we have almost 300 places in seven centers, and allows us to respond to a very important demand detected in the area, thus favoring the employability of mothers who need a job or job training to get out of a situation of vulnerability, achieve their emancipation from public aid and recover their autonomy”.
The Babysitting project covers 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, adapting its schedules to the specific needs of each family unit and providing fundamental time availability and flexibility to complement the rest of the existing resources, such as nursery schools, educational centers, day services or urban camps, among others. In addition to accompaniment, it includes a comprehensive care and education program for the harmonious development of minors.
This initiative, which served 61 people last year, also offers transport routes, displacement and accompaniment of boys and girls to their educational centers, activities, camps, day services, etc.; in addition to carrying out recreational, sports, cultural and leisure activities that favor the proper socialization of boys and girls; educational games and activities; individual and group care and follow-up sessions for families; as well as the creation of support networks, details from the association directed by Verónica Polegre. This project is joined by Tanita’s, a temporary accommodation resource for single mothers that also supports Social Welfare.
