Farewell to the Franco coat of arms on the facade of the old town hall of Santa Úrsula

The mayor of Santa Úrsula, Juan Acosta, recalls that in his municipality the names of several streets related to the civil war and the Franco dictatorship have already been changed. «That shield was pending, although the previous municipal architect had already been evaluating different alternatives for its removal and replacement by some other element».

The transfer of that official delayed municipal plans, which are now being resumed: «Our idea is to take advantage of the next employment plan to, in accordance with what the new municipal architect tells us, to act in that building where the offices are currently located. of the councils of Agriculture, Festivities, Sports and Culture “, explains Acosta. The local government is considering different options to maintain the harmony of the property.

“We are going to intervene”

“Obviously it is an anachronism and we are going to intervene,” insists the mayor, who believes that “it is most likely that it will be replaced by another symbol, such as the municipality’s coat of arms,” with the intention of not leaving a gap in one’s façade. of the most emblematic spaces of the municipality, next to the church square.

In the case of this shield, the Santa Úrsula City Council does not consider that article 15.2 of the so-called Historical Memory Law applies, which states that “the provisions of the previous section will not apply when the mentions are of strict private memory, without exaltation of the disputed, or when there are artistic, architectural or artistic-religious reasons protected by law.

After the military coup of 1936, the rebellious side began to use a new shield with elements taken from the heraldry of the Catholic Monarchs, in which the Eagle of San Juan and the yoke and arrows, also used by the Falange, appeared. The one known as the shield of the eagle was imposed at the end of the Civil War as the national shield of Spain and was used until 1981.
