The PSOE proposes to create a network of shelters against the heat in Santa Cruz

The lack of shade in public spaces is a complaint that the residents of Santa Cruz make with some frequency, especially with regard to spaces for the little ones. The PSOE of Santa Cruz has echoed this citizen demand and will present today in plenary a motion for the City Council to create spaces that operate as shelters against the heat. In the proposed agreement of the motion, presented by the socialist councilor Elena Mateo, it is added that, in addition to these spaces, the Santa Cruz City Council establishes new shaded areas in the city’s public spaces such as parks, gardens, sports facilities , sports centers, playgrounds and squares. It also proposes that shaded itineraries be created, and that new public fountains be installed, with the availability of drinking water.

In the statement of reasons for the motion, the PSOE recalls that it is expected that, due to the effects of the climate crisis, heat waves will become more frequent and intense; currently there is a heat wave every four years on average, and the forecast is that, in the best of cases, that frequency will be multiplied by 8 and, in the worst, up to 16.

That is why they propose the creation of a network of climate refuge spaces, where you can protect yourself from the heat and establish other measures for the same purpose.

A network that would be made up of places such as libraries, schoolyards, sports facilities, municipal offices, in which “climate shelters” could be set up. That is, establish rooms or spaces specially equipped to cool down and rest from the high temperatures. The objective is to reduce mortality associated with heat and adapt to the extreme episodes with which climate change threatens Spain.

Generate spaces with a stable temperature, in conditions of thermal comfort, with rest areas and with availability of water and bathroom
