SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 26. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Spanish Astronomical Society will celebrate its XV Scientific Meeting from September 5 to 9 at the University of La Laguna, in Tenerife, in collaboration with the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC).

The meeting, which is held every two years, was scheduled for 2020 but had to be replaced by a virtual version due to the pandemic. Now the astronomy professionals of our country can once again celebrate this scientific event.

More than 400 have already confirmed their attendance and almost a third are predoctoral students. There will also be representation from Italy, the guest country in this edition.

The XV Scientific Meeting of the SEA will serve as a showcase to explain the scientific and technological advances in astronomy in recent years and the Spanish participation in all of them.

The range of topics ranges from images of supermassive black holes and the results of the Gaia mission in observing our Galaxy to what is expected from the James Web Space Telescope (which is already providing spectacular images), the results of the Solar Orbiter and instrumentation in the Mars ‘rover’ or the massive discovery of exoplanets, to name just a few.

There will also be an occasion to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), of which Spain has been a full member since 2006.

The scientific program is also complemented by some outreach activities open to the public.

On Wednesday, September 7, there will be a talk about the James Webb Telescope (JWST) with Almudena Alonso, a researcher at the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, CSIC-INTA), an expert in the study of active galaxies and a member of the European Consortium of the MIRI instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope. Almudena Alonso is also involved in scientific projects for this telescope with guaranteed time.

Previously, on Saturday, September 3, a talk about the Sun is scheduled to be given by Antonio Eff-Darwich Peña, solar physicist and academic director of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of La Laguna, at a time and place still determined.

There will also be a solar observation and other outreach activities, the schedule of which will be detailed later.
