The nationalist deputy explains that in this area of the island the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of Tenerife does not have rescue boats (Salvamar) or a fixed position, so that when an accident occurs, the resources have to be transfer from the base positions located in other three points of the Island that are quite far from the North.
The three rescue vessels that Salvamento Marítimo currently has to protect the entire coast of Tenerife are based in Santa Cruz (east); Playa San Juan, municipality of Guía de Isora (west) and in Los Cristianos (south). “The distance and the very nature of the sea, rougher on the north coast, play against when it comes to arriving in time to save lives,” he laments.
Oramas’ request echoes the campaign undertaken by Natalia González, the mother of Alejandro Torres González, a 23-year-old young man from Tenerife who lost his life on October 5, 2019 after falling into the sea in Los Riscos de Martiánez, in Puerto de la Cruz. The deputy points out that “this fighting mother knows that no action will give her son back, but her greatest wish is that with everyone’s support she will prevent another person from going through the same thing again.”
