Yesterday, the new Arona wastewater treatment plant in Montaña Reverón received a decisive boost. After its construction was awarded for 22 million euros in May last year, the board of directors of the state trading company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (Acuaes), of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, announced the award for 41,536. 757 euros of the contract for the execution of the works and performance tests of the project of the collectors and impulsions associated with the treatment plant of Montaña Reverón.
Up to 17 companies submitted their offers. Those selected were those that make up the Asch Infraestructuras y Servicios-Hidrotec Aguas joint venture, which will have a term of 24 months, 18 for the execution of the works and 6 months for the start-up phase. The action, declared of general interest to the State, is part of the sanitation and purification plan that Acuaes is developing in Tenerife based on the agreement signed with the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Insular Water Council, which provides for an investment of 170 million euros, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund Feder 2014-2020.
The objective of the action is the elimination of direct discharges, without adequate treatment, which are currently produced through the submarine outfalls located in San Miguel, Las Galletas or Palm-Mar. The regeneration of treated wastewater is also contemplated to allow its reuse for agricultural irrigation. The joint action of Arona Este-San Miguel contemplates the execution of four treatment and pumping stations, six pumping stations, as well as a 64-kilometre-long network of collectors and impulsions, which will allow the connection of the Arona sanitation systems Este and San Miguel de Abona with the Montaña Reverón treatment plant, whose works are expected to begin in the coming months. In the awarded project, the treatment and pumping stations of Las Galletas and Cho will be executed, which will transfer the discharges produced in the area located between the TF-1 and the coast. The new drives that come from Costa del Silencio, Guaza and the future Palm-Mar will connect to them. The area located to the north of the TF-1 will discharge directly into the new treatment plant. There will be 40 kilometers of pipes to which are added the 13 kilometers of the land outfall of the Montaña Reverón treatment plant.
The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, yesterday celebrated the announcement by the central government of the award of the works for the collectors and drives of the Arona Este Sanitation System, which will take the form of the new Montaña Reverón treatment plant, where they will be taken waste from areas such as Las Galletas, Palm Mar, Costa del Silencio or Guaza. “This sanitation system will prevent the use of outfalls in the sea in areas such as San Miguel, Las Galletas or Palm Mar, in addition to contemplating the reuse of water for agricultural use, once treated, something similar to what is already done in Cabo Blanco, where they are treated for use in gardens,” he assured.
Mena stressed that “since the beginning of the mandate, sustainability and care for the surroundings, the coastline and the environment have been the constant of this government”, for which he pointed out that “the execution of these works, the treatment of waste and avoiding discharges into the sea of the municipality are great news, all with a significant investment, which is going to be 41.5 million for Arona ». The mayor advocates “completing the sanitation system for comprehensive treatment of all waste in the municipality and putting an end to decades of questionable treatment of the coastline in many areas of the Canary Islands and the whole of Spain.”
The Councilor for Sustainable Development of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Javier Rodríguez, indicated for his part that this action is a “priority”: “It is part of the sanitation and purification plan to be carried out on the island through an agreement between the Cabildo and Acuaes, with the aim of ending the wastewater problem that we have suffered for decades. “The Cabildo’s commitment to end wastewater discharges and achieve a more sustainable island is becoming a reality,” he concluded.
The roof of the Las Galletas pavilion
The Arona City Council reported yesterday that it is already working on putting out to tender again the works to replace the roof of the Las Galletas pavilion, which were paralyzed months ago. All of this will also take place in parallel with the penalty process planned for the winning company in the event of non-compliance, something that has happened due to the lack of materials and their increased cost, which is slowing down or paralyzing public works at all levels. In the case of Las Galletas, the Works area of the Arona City Council is already working to be able to put the execution of the works out to tender again, so it is expected that, in the coming months, the works can be resumed.
