AENA announced yesterday that it has already put out to tender the drafting of the projects to undertake the Comprehensive reform of the Tenerife South airport which will be included in DORA III (Airport Regulation Document, which plans investments from 2026) and will entail an estimated initial cost of more than 300 million euros.
This project will involve the integration of the entire terminal area of the airport, both from an architectural point of view and with the environment itself, according to the airport manager.
The Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, already confirmed this commitment during her last visit to the Reina Sofía, on May 25, to inaugurate the expansion of the airport facilities after a long renovation process that began in 2017.
AENA’s announcement was welcomed by the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, who did not rule out that the investment could reach 400 million euros “to have a real airport, which gives an adequate image of the Tenerife destination and a response functional to the needs of the Island”.
The island president described the bidding for the projects as “magnificent news”, since it shows, in his opinion, that “these two years of negotiations with the Cabildo are already bearing fruit.” In addition, he reiterated his gratitude for the involvement in the negotiations of the economic and social agents, as well as the municipalities, especially those in the South, to carry out this “priority” project for the Island.
Among the improvements planned, and pending the drafting of the final project, are the organization and execution of new car parks and accesses; review of urbanization and landscape elements; the adequacy of the baggage claim room; the expansion of the check-in and boarding areas or the incorporation of more commercial services.
Specifically, according to the information provided by AENA, the files for Technical Assistance for Project Drafting and Technical Assistance for Architecture for comprehensive remodeling of the terminal area are put out to tender, after approval by the AENA Board of Directors, with an amount of 6 .3 million euros.
This assistance includes the drafting of the project that defines the actions that must be carried out to fully remodel the airport terminal area, with an amount of 5.7 million euros and a planned period of 26 months, and architectural advice to the management of work during the execution of the works, with a net amount of 600,000 euros and a planned term of 57 months.
In addition to these files, the tender is scheduled for the second half of 2022 for the complementary technical assistance actions for the baggage handling system and aircraft assistance, for an expected amount of 1.7 million euros, which will be matched with the project drafting file, to achieve coordination in its execution and its result.
The total cost of the technical assistance allocated to the global project reaches 8 million euros, as AENA advanced in a meeting with the Cabildo de Tenerife and economic and social agents of the Island that took place in May, days before the visit of the Minister of Transport to inaugurate the expansion of the terminal building.
AENA highlighted yesterday in a statement that it is making a “huge investment effort” to turn this airport into a “benchmark among its peers at an international level, offering modern infrastructures, in accordance with the territory they serve and focused on quality, innovation and sustainability. ”.
During the first DORA, in force between 2017 and 2022, AENA has already invested 159.4 million euros in the Tenerife South airport.
The president of the Forum of Friends of the South of Tenerife (FAST), which has participated in the negotiations, yesterday recognized the work carried out by the Cabildo and business organisations, institutions and the media. He now trusts that, in addition to functionality, the architectural level of the work will be taken into account and that the “philosophy of new generation terminals, in which natural light, water and abundant vegetation prevail” will be applied.
