SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 18. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies, has declared an alert situation due to the risk of forest fires in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It will come into force from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20.

This decision is made taking into account the information available and in application of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response to Forest Fires of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (INFOCA).

The alert situation is due to the forecast of a heat episode in which temperatures of between 34 and 36 degrees are expected, especially in middle areas facing west, south and east, as well as in high areas. Temperatures will be especially high in the midlands of the south and west of Gran Canaria, where it is not ruled out that they may occasionally exceed 36 degrees.

The haze will especially affect the peaks of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, where visibility could be less than 10 km. Likewise, strong winds are expected from the northeast, with gusts that may exceed 70-75 km/h in areas usually exposed to the trade winds.

The population is urged to follow the self-protection advice of the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies.
