The work to repair the Las Galletas promenade began yesterday morning and will continue for a month. It is about correcting the damage caused by the high tide on August 20, when it produced the partial collapse of the section located at the beginning of the beach. In addition, part of the TF-66 road collapsed, which led to the closure of the access lane to the town to traffic. The budget for this emergency action is 178,873 euros.
“The beginning of the works is great news,” said the mayor of Arona, Jose Julian Mena, during the inspection of the beginning of the work. The councilor understands that “the approach is to achieve a long-term solution to the continuous problems that high tide causes on the promenade”, but considers that “with the replacement of the wall by one of the bouncy type, the chances of the waves affecting back to the ride, which we hope will be operational again as soon as possible.
The work, in charge of Cabildo of Tenerife -that declared the emergency of it-, includes the execution of a retaining wall “that allows to give stability to the road, as well as the filling of the road area that collapsed”, explained the insular counselor of Roads, Enrique Arriaga. The speed at the start of the work is motivated by the need to “prevent the spring tides from continuing to erode the structural elements of the containment system and from completely sinking the track.”
The mayor of Arona, accompanied by the councilors Francisco Marichal, Julia Morales and Ruth Lorenzo, met yesterday morning in the area with technicians from the Cabildo and representatives of the company developing the works. The purpose of this meeting was to know first-hand what the works will consist of.
To carry out the planned action safely, it will be necessary to close to traffic in a timely manner the rest of the road that remains in use, for which an alternative route is enabled. “It is essential to strictly comply with the setting and foundation times” for this section of the Las Galletas crossing to regain the necessary stability, said the island’s director of Roads, Tomás Félix García. It asks drivers who circulate in the area to take precautionary measures and heed the instructions of the operators.
The municipal government of Arona demanded from the Cabildo the rapid execution of the works due to the importance of this route for the citizens and the business fabric of Las Galletas and its neighboring centers, as well as for the upcoming start of the course.
