The Town Hall of the Villa de La Orotava just put out to tender for 240,000 euros a new public parking that will be enabled in the urbanization of Lercaro, very close to the old town, the El Mayorazgo urbanization and the La Luz road. This project, for which the municipality has been waiting at least since 2010, has a contribution of 50,000 euros from Island Council of Tenerife to help “enhance the economic development of the locality.”

Companies interested in assuming this action can consult the details of the awarding competition from last day 1 until September 21. Once the offers are analyzed, the performance will be entrusted with an execution period of four months. The objective of the City Council is to have this new car park at the beginning of the year 2022, if there are no further delays.

The municipality of La Orotava hopes to facilitate parking in this area near the historic center of the town and the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, the Town Hall, the municipal cemetery or the Rafael Arozarena Secondary Education Institute (IES). The mayor of Orotava, Francisco Linares (CC), underlines the importance of enabling this municipal-owned plot of more than 5,700 square meters as a parking lot, which will be distributed on two levels.

This project will finally require an investment of 239,993 euros, which will be paid by the City Council at 80%, while the Cabildo will be in charge of the remaining 20%, through the Insular Council for Socio-Economic Development. Last February, the councilor responsible for the area, Carmen Luz Baso Lorenzo (PSOE), from Silence, visited with the mayor and the councilors of Infrastructure and Commerce, Narciso Pérez and Felipe David Benítez (CC), respectively, the site chosen for assessing on the spot an action that has now been put out to tender seven months later.

Linares then emphasized that this performance could not be delayed any further in time, «Because it will surely contribute, due to its proximity to the downtown area, to promote and enhance local commerce. It will allow residents and visitors to park in an area close to the town and thus make their purchases more comfortable and calm. This action also fulfills “a commitment to the business and commercial sector of the municipality,” according to the nationalist president.

The island councilor also valued the interest of the Orotavense Council in taking the reins of this project to speed up the start of the work, “especially in these difficult times in which any action is necessary for the revitalization and reactivation of the economy.”

The site in Lercaro will have a level of more than 2,300 square meters and another of about 2,200 meters, while the rest will be occupied with slopes and ramps. 168 vehicles can be parked in both spaces, 93 in the first and 75 in the second.

Mercedes Pinto Avenue

The City Council of La Orotava is also working on another public parking project, with about 180 spaces available, next to Avenida Mercedes Pinto, very close to the Los Cuartos Neighborhood Association building. The municipal proposal will require an investment of about 200,000 euros, since it will be necessary to acquire the land and enable it as a parking lot.

After the purchase of the site, the City Council will have to entrust the paving of the plot, the creation of accesses adapted to people with reduced mobility and the provision of public lighting. This is another objective of the local government (CC) at least since 2018.

Regulated parking

The City Council of La Orotava launched in November 2020 the new Regulated Parking Zone (ZER), which limits parking time to a maximum of one hour on three roads in the commercial area of the urban area: Calvario Street, Calle Estévez Sculptor Race, known as El Puente, and a side of Emilio Luque avenue. This time limitation, in effect from Monday to Friday –except holidays– from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., has been well received, since rotation is facilitated of vehicles in the commercial area. Citizens can park freely, but once the maximum time limit has elapsed, the driver must leave the parking space free. Users cannot park in the same area again for two hours or, if earlier, they must park at a distance of 150 meters.
