SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 14. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife will allocate around 305,000 euros to the adaptation and improvement of the Casa del Ganadero, in La Laguna, with the aim of creating a leading fair space in which animal welfare is prioritized.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Javier Parrilla, explains in a note that more than 45,000 euros have already been invested in the conditioning of this space for the celebration of the Livestock Fair of La Laguna, promoted by the island corporation, the City Council of La Laguna and the Tenerife Breeders’ Association (Agate).

Currently, the Northeast region has 23.7 percent of the island’s livestock census (494,263 head of cattle) and a total of 310 farms, which represents 19 percent of the island’s total (1,634 farms).

For this reason, “taking into account the importance of the sector for the region, from the Cabildo we want to continue investing in this infrastructure and we will allocate another 260,000 euros to its reform and comprehensive adaptation,” he indicates.

Among other issues, the grandstand will be extended in the area of the cattle drag, the entrance and the parking area will be conditioned and paved, a new parking esplanade will be created for vehicles that transport animals, and a drainage network will be installed. rainwater, two new electrical outlets and two additional water points.

The goal is that these works can be carried out between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

THE LIVESTOCK FAIR, A BOOST FOR THE SECTOR

With regard to the livestock fair, which started on July 12 and which this year celebrates its forty-third edition, the island councilor assures that “this type of celebration always represents a boost for the sector, but today, taking into account the difficulties that the sector is facing, are even more necessary”.

Parrilla advances that the Casa del Ganadero has enough tents so that all the animals are covered and protected from the sun.

In this way, nine people will also be available for the care and attention of the animals, three night guards, two veterinarians and a first-aid post with an ambulance for public attention.

The fair, which started last Tuesday with a cooking master class, by chef Juan Carlos Clemente, on baifo meat, will continue this Friday, at 11:00 a.m., with a talk on grazing as a means of fire control , by the director of Emergencies of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Federico Grillo Delgado.

Later, around 3:00 p.m., it is expected that the animals will enter the different samples of native breeds that will take place throughout the weekend.

In this regard, the island official stresses the importance of livestock, “which contributes to and influences fundamental aspects for the island and its citizens, such as food security, tourism, the agricultural landscape, environmental protection and conservation of the genetic heritage of our indigenous breeds and our traditions”.
