The Cabildo de Tenerife will replace 29 Granadilla wind turbines with 5 new technology

The councilthrough the Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER), will replace 29 Granadilla wind turbines, located in three wind farms, with five of new technology with the same total rated power.

The insular president, the socialist Peter Martinrecalls that the 20 years of useful life of the wind turbines have already elapsed, “30 in some cases”, so “the objective of this action is to increase the efficiency in the location of future wind turbines, optimize the power and the surface available, and reduce the environmental impact, as larger strips of land are released.

Martín indicates that the administrative authorization and the environmental impact statement have already been requested from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, and points out that the project has a maximum execution period of two years.

For his part, the island councilor for Innovation, Enrique Arriaga, from Ciudadanos, points out that “From the insular Corporation continues to be firmly committed to clean energy.” «The ITER was the precursor of the same in Tenerife with the installation of the generators that are going to be changed; now it is taking a step forward and improving them to make them more efficient and sustainable », he adds.

This adaptation project will also solve problems associated with obsolete technologies such as the difficulty of obtaining spare parts, structural and material durability problems, reduced availability and efficiency, indicates Arriaga.

The 29 wind turbines that make up these three wind farms in Granadilla de Abona are arranged in two rows and occupy a total of 633 and 900 meters, respectively. The projected adaptation proposes, however, a single row of five mills 850 meters long, with a total power of 12 MW.

Part of the adaptation of the parks is carried out by the Tenerife Wind Economic Interest Group, 50% owned by ITER and ENEL Green Power, owner of one of the wind farms on which the aforementioned adaptation is proposed, they report sources of the Tenerife Island Corporation.

The Cabildo de Tenerife launched ITER in 1990. Its main objective was promote the use of renewable energies in Tenerife and research in the same field, financed through the sale of energy from its own renewable generation plants. For this reason, and for a decade, the Institute installed on its land in Granadilla de Abona the three wind farms, owned or owned, with about 13 MW of nominal power.

The first wind platform was a 1.05 MW facility designed to study the operation and performance of different wind turbines. Since then, the institute has installed a total of 13 MW of wind energy and 41 MW of photovoltaic energy, being responsible for the installation of 35% of the total installed power of renewable origin on the island of Tenerife.

infrastructures

To these facilities must be added other infrastructures that have been developed over the years to support and promote R&D activities, such as the D-ALiX High Availability Data Processing Center, the Wind Tunnel for Civil Trials , the CCG-ITER Generation Control Center or the Photovoltaic laboratories (SiCellLab), Chemistry and isotopes of gases and groundwater, or electronics, says the Cabildo.
