The workforce of the hotel La Pazof Cross portdemonstrated this Thursday in Santa Cruz to demand the reopening of the establishment, closed since the declaration of the state of alarm due to the Covid-19 pandemicin March 2020. The Secretary General of grassroots unionists, Manuel Fitasexplains that the 46 affected are “tired of promises about the resumption of the hotel’s activity, after years of conflict between Weare Hotels and the property, Casa Kishoo». That is why they have decided to mobilize in front of the headquarters of the owner company.

Fitas points out that the staff of the hotel La Paz went to a situation of Erte of force majeure, between March 2020 and March 2021, and in the midst of a legal conflict between both companies. «Due to the lack of solutions regarding the opening, and with the staff in the middle of the serious uncertainty about their future, it was agreed to sign a new Erte until September 30, which was approved by the bankruptcy administrator and the judge assigned to the bankruptcy proceedings affecting Weare La Paz SL. In this case it was for organizational, economic and production reasons.

Manuel Fitas appreciates that the property is committed to protecting jobs in a new contract

The situation of these workers is getting worse, according to the general secretary of grassroots unionists«with the interpretation of the unemployment benefits that correspond to them, since many could be left without benefits in the period of the new Erte, since they sold us the motorcycle in its day in that the Erte of force majeure did not consume the benefits, to later nuance it in the successive extensions. In the end, it has become clear that, except for the termination of the employment contract before December 31, 2022, 15 months were consumed, between January 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. This new interpretation of the State Public Employment Service (Sepe) has carried the anxiety and despair workers at the La Paz hotel, as they have been told that, in most cases, they are only entitled to one or two months of unemployment benefits. Some resolutions that will be appealed by the legal service of this union ».

Fitas points out that grassroots unionists met with the legal service of Kishoo House“which insisted on its lack of responsibility in the face of the situation experienced by the workers due to the abandonment of the hotel and the possible breach of the contract by Weare Hotels. But they have committed to fine-tuning the hotel and looking for an alternative reopening, with the inclusion of a subrogation clause for the current hotel staff. This commitment has been positively valued by the staff, who demonstrated in the capital last Thursday.
