The City Council of Puerto de la Cruz has begun the procedures for the feasibility study to install a new auditorium and parking floors in the old bus station, thus ruling out going ahead with the San Francisco Park project, which planned to build both buildings in near the church of San Francisco.
“The city government wants to guarantee that these works do not damage our historical heritage in any way, and for this reason the option of finalizing the installation procedure in Parque San Francisco has been postulated, since they are works that, in addition to being dangerous , they are very expensive -21 million euros- due to their high complexity”, detailed the mayor, Marco González, as reported in a statement.
The mayor has also added that “if we take into account that the new Park could only house 600 people after the innumerable modifications that the original project has undergone, this limited capacity would hamper the capacity of both the administration and private developers to carry out All kinds of cultural events take place in said installation”, so “the need to choose another place to locate this resource becomes evident”.
Under these conditions, the councilor responsible for the Sustainable City area, David Hernández, has delved into the “risk” involved in the initially planned construction.
The drafting technicians explicitly show their concern, since the reports indicate that the vibration thresholds will be exceeded and, consequently, the transmission of movements to the load-bearing walls of the asset of cultural interest (BIC) of the Church of San Francisco, that could be affected.
“Continuing with the San Francisco Park project under these conditions would entail new increases in its cost, which has already gone from 5 to 21 million euros without even having started the execution of the work,” said the councilor.
For this reason, both the Sustainable City area and the Culture area, together with the consortium and the Cabildo de Tenerife, are evaluating the option of moving the auditorium to the old bus station.
This would increase capacity, with the possibility of quadrupling its capacity to 2,000 people, and would give the opportunity to create a parking area for the city’s hotel, commercial and residential sectors, without the need to significantly increase the budget, González indicated. .
Procedures have been launched to contract the drafting of a feasibility study for the land of the old station, a site that has been abandoned since 2009, the year in which the facility was closed to the public due to its advanced state of deterioration.
There is already a preliminary study on the urban conditions of the block and the alternative uses that it could house, to which now, among other modifications, the future auditorium could be added.
